Mavin & Co is a firm of Tax Specialists, owned by Don Mavin, who provide advice and assistance in tax investigations, disputes and litigation involving VAT, customs duties and excise duties to individuals and businesses, as well as to accountants and other tax advisers. Accountants or tax advisers increasingly refer clients to us in situations where, for example, a VAT enquiry or investigation is under way and HMRC is indicating VAT assessments are likely to be issued, together with penalties, or a client's VAT repayments are being withheld by HMRC. Where required, we robustly challenge any invalid or incorrect assumptions made by HMRC and seek to minimise any VAT and/or duty liability and penalties. We advise and represent clients in taking an appeal before the Tax Tribunal in VAT and customs and excise duty appeals. We also provide litigation support as an expert witness to the legal profession in both criminal and civil proceedings involving VAT and customs and excise duty matters. Don Mavin is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, a Member of the Academy of Experts, a Founding Member of the Expert Witness Institute and a contributor on Customs fraud investigations to Butterworths’ “Fraud: Law, Practice and Procedure”.
