Polyester is one of the world’s most widely used materials - but circularity remains a challenge. matterr is a climate-tech company based in Germany that has developed a chemical recycling technology for blended polyester waste that enables circularity where conventional recycling reaches its limits. Using alkaline hydrolysis, matterr chemically recycles mixed polyester waste - such as multilayer packaging and blended textiles - into its original monomers. After purification, the recovered monomers can be reused in established polyester production processes for textile and packaging applications. This allows valuable material to remain in use rather than being lost from the system, replacing fossil-based raw materials, reduce emissions, and support industrial-scale circularity. Backed by strategic investors and supported by EU funding, matterr is now implementing this technology at industrial scale by building its first industrial plant in North Rhine-Westphalia.
