Ecoembes is a non-profit public limited company whose corporate objects include the design and organization of an Integrated Management System (SIG) for the selective collection and recovery of packaging waste for subsequent treatment, recycling and upgrading.
Ecoembes was incorporated in 1996. Since then, more than 12,000 companies have joined the SIG. Its shareholders include 57 companies and groups comprising all of the sectors which participate in the management of packaging, from manufacturers and packagers to distributers, manufacturers of raw materials and recyclers.
In 1998, when Ecoembes started to operate, household packaging recovery and recycling rates were 5% and, 16years later, more than 70%. This data have enabled our country in 15 points exceed the objectives set by the European Union in the field of recycling of packaging (55%)
Since 1998, we have avoided more than 12.8 million tonnes of packaging ending up in landfill sites. This has allowed a reduction in emissions to the atmosphere of 12.6 million tonnes equivalent of CO2, and a reduction of energy consumption (14.5 million MWh) and water (343 million cubic metres of water).
