Our history In 1976 the family planning pioneer and co-founder of Marie Stopes International, Dr Tim Black CBE, saved the famous Marie Stopes clinic in central London, after he heard it was going to close down due to financial difficulty. Marie Stopes House, as it is now known, became the first of more than 600 Marie Stopes International clinics around the world. More than 40 years later the organisation has grown into the world's largest provider of contraception and safe abortion services, with more than 12,000 team members in 37 countries. We still provide services from that first clinic, the spiritual home of our global organisation. There are more than 200 million around the world who don’t want to get pregnant but can’t get modern contraception, and each year more than 20,000 women die from an unsafe abortion with millions more injured. We’re proud to be part of the global Marie Stopes International global partnership, which is working to prevent the harm caused when women can’t access contraception and safe abortion services. Marie Stopes International serves women in 37 countries, mainly in developing countries across Asia and Africa. There are currently more than 25 million people around the world using a method of contraception provided by Marie Stopes International, and in 2016 the organisation provided 3.6 million safe abortion services.
