Located in Sausalito, California, Savoir Faire began with products made by the Sennelier company, and our philosophy has been based on Sennelier's dedication to and involvement with artists for over one hundred years. Founded in 1887, in a shop across from the Louvre just steps away from the École des Beaux Arts on the famous Left Bank of Paris, Sennelier's legacy began when Gustave Sennelier began to mix oil colors and watercolors for the most important painters of the time, including Cézanne, Picasso, Bonnard, Pissaro, Gauguin, Chagall and Kandinsky, as well as for nearby students. Today, just as they were then, our pigments are slowly ground with the medium on granite to obtain the consistency our customers have always desired. After the watercolors were perfected in 1893, Sennelier made an extremely significant contribution to artists in the early 1900's with the development of soft pastels à l'écu, an incredibly soft, intense color medium handmade from pure pigments. Later, the company's world famous oil pastels were developed specifically for Picasso who requested a versatile tool he could use to draw with on any surface, and in a palette very close to the one he used for his oils. Sennelier's most recent creation is Tinfix Design, a state of the art line of 104 colors for silk painting and surface design.Throughout all this growth and even into the development of silk paints, Gustave was followed first, by his sons Charles and Henri, and now, by his grandson, Dominique, who has not only preserved the pure family tradition--sustaining the composition and formulas created a century ago--but also keeping special office hours in the original Sennelier store each week to meet artists, look over their work, to give technical assitance, and remain aware of their specific needs.Savoir Faire's other products include Isabey brushes from Brittany, where each brush is meticulously hand crafted by centuries-old techniques to guarantee a product of the most exquisite quality; Fabriano Papers from Italy, the most celebrated papermaker in Europe who has been making the finest cotton rag art papers for watercolor, drawing, writing and printmaking since the 13th century; the centuries old Moulin de Larroque, located in the Bordeaux region of France, the last working mill in the region to make hand made mill papers; and Lascaux Acrylics from Switzerland, the highest quality acrylics available anywhere. But even though we feel so strongly about our products, Savoir Faire needs your help to insure that they fit artists' needs as fully as possible. Throughout the future, we'd like you--the experts--to test them yourself and give us your feedback on our products. With your energy, input, and assistance, we'd like to continue this legacy of serving artists' needs by both improving the existing art materials and developing new ones. With your responses we will be sending you materials for your evaluation and enjoyment. Again, we at Savoir Faire would like to thank you for your interest in our line of fine art materials, and welcome you to our family. By working together, we can assure your that our products will help you make your finest work ever.
