LumaMed's wide-field microscopic imaging, which utilizes common cancer markers and stains as well as natural fluorescence, has been shown in several studies to provide a visual aid for physicians to determine the margins of previously diagnosed lesions in real time. LumaMed generates images similar to Optical Coherence Tomography or Confocal Microscopy but with a wider field of view and without mosaic artifacts. We believe the contrast in our images between cancer and normal tissue can help the surgeon or pathologist visualize clean cancer margins. Our initial device, LumaScan I is a physician interpreted table top inverted microscope designed to hold a proprietary disposable tray and provide a clear view of the outer surface of excised tissue. LumaScan I can be used to provide an aid to margin visualization prior to definitive histopathology. Future LumaScan products may include imaging devices for invivo use as well as products with algorithms needed for cancer identification that suggest the cancer margins for the surgeon prior to excision. LumaMed products are not presently available for sale in the United States and are never intended to replace the conventional histopathology for definitive analysis.
