Loaves & Fishes Southwest Detroit Information

In 2005, the Together in Faith plan of the Archdiocese of Detroit for the Southwest Vicariate recognized the need for outreach to the working poor and the growing homeless population in the vicariate and suggested that a team model might well be employed. Loaves and Fishes Southwest Detroit was founded as a collaborative means towards a team approach in the area of the hunger and food insecurity of the multi-ethnic residents living in zip codes: 48209, 48210, 48216 and 48217. By collaborating, the partnership seeks to: share resources, grow its volunteer base, build on best practices, eliminate redundant efforts and improve communication within the network. Short-term goals and activities focus on: food distribution, agency referrals, fund-raising, and developing a strong organizational structure that will support our long term programs. Long-term goals and activities focus on: building capacity in our clients to do for themselves through home-based entrepreneurial businesses and grassroots leadership development and empowering residents to address the food insecurity in their neighborhoods through advocacy.
