We are an international non-governmental organization operating in more than 20 countries. We bring light to local communities that do not have access to electricity or that live without light in their homes. We use simple, economical, and sustainable technology. We work through initiatives including workshops, corporate volunteering, and other specific actions sponsored by partners. All of this is accomplished using a social development methodology that allows for the mapping of communities, understanding their needs, training residents, and mobilizing volunteers for actions. Mechanic Alfredo Moser, a Brazillian, hung this improvised lamp made of a plastic bottle on the ceiling of his house in 2002 during a blackout, and soon the neighbors began using the idea. Filipino Illac Diaz, creator of the My Shelter foundation that develops low-cost and sustainable projects, saw an opportunity to help poor families in his country and created “A Liter of Light” based on the solution created by Moser. Since then, the idea has been refined and applied in several countries around the world. In Brazil, the project started in 2014 and today it operates in the 5 regions of the country, with teams in states: Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Federal District, Paraíba and Manaus. Our Mission: To improve people's quality of life through sustainable lighting solutions and empower agents of change. Our Vision: To have a country where access to lighting is available despite socioeconomic and geographical barriers.
