Light Equity expands access to thoughtful lighting design for communities that have historically been excluded from its benefits. Many people are unaware that professional lighting design exists, what it can make possible or how to access it. The process can be opaque, fragmented and largely reserved for well-resourced projects. Light Equity creates clearer pathways to lighting knowledge, professional expertise and practical resources—helping more people achieve equitable outcomes in safety, wellness, resilience, environmental responsibility and quality of life. Our work combines public education, accessible tools, professional volunteerism, community partnerships and advocacy. We collaborate with residents, nonprofit organizations, designers, builders and public agencies to make lighting a more understandable and useful community resource. Light for LA is our first place-based initiative. Created in response to the Los Angeles wildfires, it is developing practical guidance and partnerships to support equitable rebuilding. It also serves as a prototype for future “Light for…” initiatives that communities can adapt to their own needs. The tools and lessons produced through each initiative will contribute to a shared, evolving public resource. Light Equity is fiscally sponsored by Miyamoto Relief. Current partners include Foothill Catalog Foundation and the Los Angeles Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society.
