Even the smartest people we know have financial problems: - 75% of us live month-to-month, from payday to payday. Some of us don't make it that long. - 40% of us spend more than we make, we do this by using credit cards or loans to survive, thus we stay in debt. This shows in the NCR report that of the 19.6-million credit-active consumers in South Africa, more than 9.25-million have impaired records. - We have no budget, how do we know what we spend? - We pay R450 000 for a R240 000 car over 5 years. - We take out a loan to consolidate our debt thereby just moving the debt around. - We take out money from our access bond, the bank would rather lend against your home than against your name. Just moving unsecured debt to a secured debt. - We leave our jobs and use our retirement money to buy luxuries instead of re-investing it. - We have no emergency savings. As many as 92% would have to look outside of their own savings i.e. family, friends, credit cards for help. How many of us can identify with not one, but several of the points on this list? If you can't, I bet you know more than one person who can. The surprise is that these issues also affect the smartest people we know. This is not only the problem of the poor.
