Founded in 1388, the University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. As a member of the “German U15,” Germany’s association of leading research-oriented universities, it is also among the country’s top-level research institutions. In 2012, the University of Cologne was awarded extensive funding within the framework of the Excellence Initiative, a nationwide competition tendered by the German federal and state governments to promote cutting-edge research and enhance quality in education. The University of Cologne covers a broad spectrum of disciplines. It encompasses six large Faculties: ‘Management, Economics and Social Sciences’, ‘Law’, ‘Medicine’, ‘Arts and Humanities’, ‘Mathematics and Natural Sciences’, as well as ‘Human Sciences’. Currently, approximately 48,500 students are enrolled, taking advantage of a wide variety of courses including joint degree programmes with renowned international partner universities such as Paris-Sorbonne University, University College London, Maastricht University or the Warsaw School of Economics. Academic excellence, internationality, a strong focus on research and a wide range of study programmes create a vibrant and inspiring environment, making the University of Cologne an appealing modern university in the centre of Europe.

Mit über 45.000 Studierenden ist die FOM eine der größten Hochschulen Europas. Sie ist eine Initiative der Stiftung für internationale Bildung und Wissenschaft mit Sitz in Essen. Die FOM bietet Abiturienten, Berufstätigen und internationalen Studierenden die Möglichkeit, berufsbegleitend oder in Vollzeit zu studieren. Das Angebot umfasst über 60 praxisorientierte Studiengänge aus den Hochschulbereichen Wirtschaft & Management, Wirtschaft & Psychologie, Wirtschaft & Recht, Gesundheit & Soziales, IT Management sowie Ingenieurwesen. Alle Bachelor- und Master-Abschlüsse der FOM sind sowohl staatlich als auch international anerkannt. Studiert wird an der FOM entweder im Hörsaal am Campus an einem von mehr als 30 Hochschulzentren bundesweit oder online im Digitalen Live-Studium in virtueller Präsenz – live gesendet aus den Hightech-TV-Studios der FOM Hochschule. Die Hochschule kooperiert mit über 10.000 Unternehmen – von Start-ups über mittelständische Unternehmen bis hin zu global agierenden Konzernen. Dazu zählen beispielsweise BMW, IBM, Siemens und die Telekom. Als forschungsstarke Hochschule betreibt die FOM mehr als 20 Institute und KompetenzCentren, die anwendungsorientiert Lösungen für betriebliche und gesellschaftliche Problemstellungen generieren. Im Rahmen der FOM Summer Academy besteht für FOM Studierende die Möglichkeit, Auslandserfahrungen an renommierten internationalen Partnerhochschulen zu sammeln. Studieninteressierte aus dem Ausland können sich an der FOM im Rahmen von Master-Studiengängen akademisch weiterqualifizieren.

The FernUniversität in Hagen is Germany’s only state distance-learning university, and its largest in terms of student numbers. Its flexible degree programs and continuing education options make higher education accessible to students in a variety of life situations. Its five faculties conduct a wide range of theoretical and applied research in their subject areas of Humanities and Social Sciences, Psychology, Mathematics and Computer Science, Economics and Business Administration, and Law. The FernUniversität’s teaching concept is based on a blended learning approach, which combines printed, multimedia, and online study materials with optional in-person seminars and events. This allows students the flexibility to learn when and where they want. At the same time, students receive support through personal advising and mentoring, study groups, and seminars on the Hagen campus and in regional centers throughout Germany and abroad. The FernUniversität ensures the high quality of its education through a variety of measures including wikis to provide practical support with planning and implementing teaching and learning scenarios, funding programs to promote innovative approaches to teaching and learning, evaluation and analysis of study programs, and extensive in-house training and support for teaching staff with a focus on instructional design in e-learning and distance teaching.
