Legendary Women, Inc. Information

We are an organization that strives to promote positive images of women in the media and to help empower women in their daily lives via philanthropy. We firmly believe that, "every woman should have the chance to be 'legendary.'" Our board and members came together through the power of the internet. As a result, we have members from Australia to Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles and from places in between. Thus, we meet almost excusively over Skype or email and positions with us are telecommuting volunteer. We seek to empower women through three ways. First, our site, which is in the process of a relaunch, works to highlight strong women role models, whether they be historical, current women leaders and inspirations, models from our personal lives, or even fictional heroines who have captured our imagination like Buffy Summers or Dana Scully. Our site works to profile these women along with hosting columns analyzing the media on a weekly basis, those profiling worthwhile women's charities, and pieces detailing news events and debates affecting women currently. Second, we engage in philanthropy. We run virtual campaigns via our online media presence to raise funds, attend comic cons and team up in person with charities that need in person assitance to raise money from conventioners, and we also work to collect material donations, such as books, for foundations that need suppplies. To date, we've raised over eight thousand dollars in monetary and in-kind donations for such worthy causes as The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, SAY-YES, Moving Creations, Inc., and The Women's Prison Book Project of Minnesota. We've worked along side non-profits like IBG, Inc. and Random Acts.Org to complete these goals. Finally, we seek to not only critique the media and help women through giving but to also create new, positive media expressions about women.
