The Legal Information Clinic at McGill (LICM) is a non-profit, student-run, bilingual, and free legal information service. Our mandate is to provide legal information, referral, and community services to the McGill and Montreal communities, with a continuing commitment to meeting the needs of marginalized groups. For issues within the McGill community, Student Advocacy offers free advice and representation to students accused of a disciplinary offence (such as plagiarism or cheating) or students who feel unjustly treated by the University. We help students find formal and informal solutions to their problems. Both Directors and Volunteer Case Workers work at the LICM. LICM Directors work full-time during the summer and part-time during the school year. They manage the Clinic’s operations, and supervise a team of around 70 volunteers. Each Director supervises volunteers for 8 hours a week, guiding and assisting their research to ensure that high-quality legal information is delivered to clients. During the summer, the remaining hours are spent working on management and operations; each Director is in charge of a specific portfolio (such as Communications, Research, Community Service, or Human Resources). During the school year, the amount of managerial work required varies week by week. Other Director responsibilities include volunteer recruitment and training, sitting on the Clinic’s Board of Directors, and training the new Director team. Volunteer Case Workers answer phone calls from clients and conduct legal research under the supervision of Directors. The required commitment consists of a weekly two-hour shift. Volunteer Case Workers conduct research on a variety of legal issues including employment law, residential leases, consumer protection, family law, immigration law, business law, and property law. They also prepare and deliver legal educational presentations to community organizations and student groups at McGill. Court Access Workers participate in the Court Accompaniment Project. They meet clients at Small Claims Division court or the Regie du logement and provide them with moral support and general procedural information.
