He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 25, 1949. He was admitted to the Massachusetts bar and the U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts in 1976; the U.S. Court of Appeals Second Circuit in 1980; the U.S. Court of Appeals, First Circuit in 1982; and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1984. He graduated from Tufts University (B.A. magna cum laude, 1971) and received his Juris Doctorate from Boston College in 1975. Attorney Smith was a Contributing Editor of The Massachusetts Family Law Journal. Since 1986, he has published several law review articles including "Confrontation and the Child Hearsay Statute," (The Massachusetts Family Law Journal, March 1993). In 2015, Attorney Smith was on the faculty of the Cutting Edge Issues in Western Massachusetts Family Law. In 2014, Attorney Smith was on the faculty of the Sophisticated Issues in Western Massachusetts Family Law Practice and taught the program entitled "Tax Issues: Traps for the Unwary. In 2013, Attorney Smith was on the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Seminar "How to Try Divorce Cases in Massachusetts. In this program Attorney Smith taught other lawyers how to try divorce cases including the use of Experts such as C.P.A.'s, forensic accountants, business valuators and real estate appraisers. In 2009, Attorney Smith was on the faculty of the Continuing Legal Education Program "Evidence for the Civil Litigator," and in 2008, he was on the faculty of the "Experts in Residence Seminar:Divorce Issues" seminar.He has also taught seminars on Guardians Ad Litem for both the Hampden County Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association. Attorney Smith was a Contributing Editor for the Massachusetts Family Law Journal in 1986. He was also a faculty member on Issues of Domestic Relations and Restraining Orders in 1999. He has more than 50 published Appellate opinions including C.C. v. A.B., 406 Mass. 679 (1990) and J.F. v. J.F., 72 Mass.App.Ct. 782 (2008). Attorney Smith is a member of the Hampden County and Massachusetts Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Massachusetts Trial Lawyers Association. Melissa L. Campana
