Lucas Kovalcik and Tim Walsh – avid climbers and entrepreneurial minded – decided to open their first indoor rock gym, called The Gravity Vault, in 2004. Natives of Bergen County, NJ, they knew there was a need for a state-of-the-art climbing gym in the county and wanted to share their passion for the sport. Opening the first Gravity Vault was only the first step in creating a franchise. They knew how fast the sport was growing and wanted to have a solid foundation with at least two operating gyms before they franchised. Their gyms have been featured in Fitness Magazine, the New York Times, Entrepreneur Magazine, The Bergen Record, 201 Magazine, Rockland Today Magazine and Urban Climber Magazine to name just a few publications. Gravity Vault also has been featured on Fox News, CNBC, MSNBC and many more. In addition to many rock-climbing awards, Kovalcik and Walsh were named co-2013 New Jersey State Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Brooklyn Boulders
A unique climbing and fitness experience, Brooklyn Boulders (BKB) opened its doors in 2009, in the old Daily News Garage in Brooklyn, NY. With facilities now nestled in the hearts of New York, Boston and Chicago, BKB combines play, work and life, by creating and fostering a diverse community of climbers, creatives, artists, fitness enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs, with the aim of Becoming Superhuman Together. Whether interpreted literally (massive rocks, weirdly yet creatively crafted in Brooklyn-style), figuratively (enabling people to defy gravity, to climb without ropes...to be free), or a mixture of both, our name, Brooklyn Boulders, is all for the observer to interpret and define for themselves. BKB means many different things to many different people. But the backbone of Brooklyn? The heart and soul of Brooklyn Boulders? Our people. GET WEIRD: Be yourself. BKB is your creative playground. CO-CREATE: Trust your team. Results are stronger when we collaborate. BE RELENTLESS: Take risks. Fall hard. Get back up. MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL: Create something extraordinary. Be proud to share it. Never stop improving. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING: Approach challenges with confidence and grit. INSPIRE
