Kulcha is the key organisation in Western Australia dedicated to developing, promoting and presenting culturally diverse artists throughout the state. It is a national leader in multicultural arts, with interstate connections through the Kultour network. Kulcha was established in 1983 as a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation called the North Perth Ethnic Music Centre. It was incorporated in 1985 and renamed the Multicultural Arts Centre of WA. We finally became Kulcha Multicultural Arts of Western Australia when we relocated to our current Fremantle headquarters in 1996. Kulcha annually coordinates up to 400 multi-cultural, multi-artform, multi-level and multi-access arts activities that enrich the lives of many West Australians every week. Our activities now reach a direct audience of some 200,000 people each year, providing public value not just by adding cultural vitality, but by facilitating greater social inclusivity, cultural understanding, respect and harmony in the community. Kulcha's role is increasingly important given the substantial growth in population and demographic diversity that has resulted from WA's resource-driven economic prosperity and increased immigration. It is conservatively estimated that since its birth in 1983, Kulcha has embraced a total audience of over 2.5 million, promoting and presenting over 12,000 artists from culturally diverse backgrounds.
