Kings Gospel Mission is striving to be the Hand Up that Men need in the community. A Hand Out only lasts for a minute. A Hand Up lasts a lifetime.  The money you directly give a homeless person is very unlikely to help that person.  Giving to an organization that is helping the homeless by introducing a changed way of thinking, as well as material Food and Shelter is a much more successful method of giving. We address the needs of the whole individual...spiritual, physical and mental instead of addressing their urgent momentary need. At KGM it is our mission to give the homeless of Kings County a helping hand UP into God centered healing, self sufficiency, and then eventually giving back to their community. What it means to be homeless:Alone - People with strong support systems don’t usually end up in homeless shelters. Afraid and Broken - There is ALWAYS a reason for homelessness. Tragedy, mental health, loss of a loved one, disability, a medical emergency or chronic illness may all play a part in why a person has become homeless. Served our country - 9% of the homeless population are veterans. Most of these vets have experienced homelessness as a result of mental health or physical issues related to their service/combat. Not Lazy - It is a common misconception that the homeless live this way as a lifestyle. While this does happen, only 15% of the homeless are in the category of what we would consider ‘chronic homelessness’ meaning long term or repeated bouts of homelessness. Even of those ‘chronic homeless’ most of them are mentally ill and in need of assistance from professionals. Giving a handout helps but it doesn't solve - While money may temporarily relieve hunger or a desire for a drink it will never solve the reason for which a person became homeless. A holistic and individual approach to each person has been the only proven method of help to a homeless person. Each situation is different and unique and should be treated as such.
