We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders that cause children to experience learning difficulties. The neurodevelopmental disorders in which we specialize include specific learning disorders, language disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, and handwriting-related motor disorders. We do not diagnose or treat intellectual development disorders (previously termed mental retardation), speech disorders, autism spectrum disorders, or non-handwriting-related motor disorders. The term "learning disabilities" is generally used within the education system to describe the neurodevelopmental disorders that we diagnose and treat. If your child is experiencing learning difficulties that are related to a learning disability, then we can help you understand why your child is struggling and what you can do to help your child reach his or her full academic potential. A child who is experiencing learning difficulties often has a neurodevelopmental disorder that negatively affects one or more of the basic cognitive processes involved in learning. Such a child may have difficulty reading, listening, thinking, speaking, writing, spelling or doing math calculations. Dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia are all examples of relatively common learning disabilities that often go undiagnosed and untreated. While some children with neurodevelopmental disorders will experience learning difficulties that negatively impact multiple areas of academic achievement, other such children will experience learning difficulties that negatively impact only one area of academic achievement. While some children with neurodevelopmental disorders will experience more severe learning difficulties, other such children will experience less severe learning difficulties.
