Khaya Volunteer Information

Khaya means "home"​ in isiXhosa, the language spoken by the black population (the Xhosa tribe) in the Southern regions of South Africa and this is what we strive for; being a home from home! The organization was founded in 2005 by Martijn van der Put (Holland, 1975) and started with projects in South Africa , but in 2011 Tanzania and Zanzibar were added followed by Malawi in 2014. During his study years Martijn volunteered in several countries such as Israel, Suriname and South Africa. These experiences made him rethink the concept of volunteering abroad and how most organizations are offering this. He believes that by living locally and actually working with projects on site, he can offer truly unique and affordable volunteer projects from the ground up. During your stay in South Africa or or one of the other countries, we want you to experience the real African cultures and the beautiful nature of these countries. In order to discover the most awesome places, which you might not be able to find on your own, we offer all the help you might need to plan your holidays and travels through these exciting countries. Khaya offers services and support to anyone, young or old, who would like to volunteer and make a difference for the people, nature or animals of South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi.
