En application de la loi d’orientation de l’enseignement supérieur de 1968, le Centre Universitaire de La Réunion est créé en 1970. Il est alors composé de trois Unités d’Enseignement et de Recherche : Droit-économie, Lettres et Sciences. Le centre universitaire devient donc un établissement public, à caractère scientifique et culturel, doté d’une personne morale et d’une autonomie financière. En 1982, le centre universitaire devient université de plein exercice. En 1984, l’île de La Réunion dispose de sa propre académie. L’Université de La Réunion est un établissement français d’enseignement supérieur et de recherche, situé au cœur de l’océan Indien, dans l’une des régions ultra-périphériques de l’Europe. De par sa position géostratégique originale, elle est la seule université européenne dans cette région du monde. Elle accueille chaque année près de 12.000 étudiants dans plus de 80.000 m² de bâtiments répartis sur les sites de Saint-Denis (au Moufia, à la Victoire, au Parc Technologique Universitaire et à Bellepierre), ainsi que sur ceux du Tampon et de Saint-Pierre. Par son offre de formation, ses activités de recherche, son rayonnement international et ses conditions de vie étudiante, l’Université de La Réunion possède de nombreux atouts pour jouer pleinement son rôle d’interface entre l’Europe et l’océan Indien.
