Karwan-e-Hayat is a voluntary welfare non-government organization, registered under the 1984 Companies Ordinance and active in caring for mentally ill indigent patients since its establishment in 1983. Late Begum Liaquat Ali Khan, wife of the first Prime Minister of Pakistan, was amongst founder members of Karwan-e-Hayat.Other eminent personalities were: (Late) Cardinal Joseph Cordeiro, Ms. Anita Ghulam Ali, Begum Abdul Kadir, Prof. Zaki Hasan, Dr. Abdullah Hussaini, Dr. M. Zafar Quraishi and Mr. Ismail Bawany. Dr. M. Zafar Quraishi continues to be on Karwan-e-Hayat Board. Karwan-e-Hayat runs an outpatient facility at Khayaban-e-Jami, a Psychiatric Care and Rehabilitation Centre (PCRC) at Keamari, and the Korangi Community and Psychiatric Center (KCPC) at Korangi, in Karachi. It is the only non-profit, non-government organization in mental health field in Karachi.
