Isara was founded in 2005 by Patrick Kirk Gillock (PK), an American volunteer living in northeastern Thailand. Although Isara had been doing humanitarian projects since 2002, it wasn't until November, 2005 that Isara.org was created. Until then PK had been asking friends and family for donations and was getting tired of bothering everyone (as I'm sure they were too). The solution was simple; do what the rich websites do - get visitors and sell advertising, BUT, instead of lining our own pockets, ALL ad revenue will fund Isara charity projects.
