The Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade is Korea's only national policy research institution specializing in industrial policy and trade.
First established in 1976 to support the industrial development of the Korean economy and to promote the expansion of trade, KIET has for nearly a half-century served as Korea's preeminent think tank for industry and trade policy. KIET has since its inception focused on enhancing national competitiveness and bolstering industrial resilience in response to changes in the global industrial environment, and has made important contributions to Korean industrial and trade policies.
KIET is one of 26 public research institutions under the auspices of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities, and Social Sciences (NRC), itself an umbrella organization reporting to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea.
KIET consists of four specialized research groups: the Industrial Transition Strategy Research Group, the Global Competitiveness Strategy Research Group, the Economic Outlook and Statistical Research Group, and the Regional Economics Research Group.
KIET's core products are annual Research Reports, which are volume-length treatises on economic issues of national importance and the result of major investments of time, energy, and research capacity. KIET also publishes numerous briefs and white papers on timely issues, including the Monthly Industrial Economics series and the English-language Industrial Economic Review.
