In 2009, six national health professions education associations came together to form the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), with a shared mission to advance meaningful interprofessional learning experiences. The goal then—and now—is to better prepare future health professionals for team-based care and to improve patient and population health outcomes. Today, IPEC has grown into a coalition of 22 associations representing a broad range of health professions. IPEC collaborates with academic institutions and their partners to promote interprofessional education (IPE) and support collaborative practice across the health system. IPEC’s Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice report defines the essential competencies of IPE: Values and Ethics, Roles and Responsibilities, Communication, and Teams and Teamwork. These competencies continue to guide innovative, practice-ready IPE efforts worldwide.
