The Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation - State Research Institute (IUNG-PIB), is the main national agricultural research-development centre in Poland. IUNG-PIB provides policy support to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MRiRW). The broad range of activities is comprised of land suitability assessment and modelling, developing soil databases, assessment of policy impacts on landscapes, modelling land use change, assessment of anthropogenic pressures on land, spatial analysis of land degradation status and drivers. One of the main research objectives is studying drivers and processes controlling sustainable use of land resources balancing social, economic and environmental objectives. The unique value of our work is integration of high resolution spatial databases characterising various aspects of land use, soil quality, socio-economic patterns in one GIS system with a complete country coverage.
