Since 1858, the IfW has been researching and teaching in the fields of design, experimental investigation, simulation and optimization of machine tools and their assemblies, tools and manufacturing processes, as well as hand-held power tools. The research and development projects of the institute include machining processes for metallic materials and their alloys, plastics, composites as well as for solid wood or wood-based materials. Furthermore, generative manufacturing processes, safety and automation technology as well as environmental technology with regard to the reduction of occurring emissions and the development of energy saving potentials are in the focus of the considerations. Intelligent machine and tool technologies, resource and material efficiency as well as ergonomic design of machine tools have always been an integral part of the IfW's work.
