Insert.com created embedded systems software for the SelfCharge device, which is used for unattended charging and conditioning of smart lithium-ion battery packs. The charger monitors all aspects of the charging process both external to the battery pack and internally through a single wire serial interface to the battery pack itself. To safely and properly charge the battery pack, the charger must monitor charge current and voltage, charger temperature, battery temperature, initial cell voltage and charge time. The charger uses serial communications and LEDs to provide feedback to the operator. To provide for new future battery packs, the software in the device is field upgradeable using a special communications protocol to transmit the new application code to code residing in a boot block.
