The National Biodiversity Institute (INBio) of Costa Rica is a private research and biodiversity management center, established in 1989 to support efforts to gather knowledge on the country’s biological diversity and promote its sustainable use. The institute works under the premise that the best way to conserve biodiversity is to study it, value it, and utilize the opportunities it offers to improve the quality of life of human beings. INBio is a non-governmental, non-profit, public interest organization of civil society that works in close collaboration with different government institutions, universities, the private sector and other public and private organizations, both within and outside Costa Rica. El INBio es un centro de investigación y gestión de la biodiversidad, establecido en 1989 para apoyar los esfuerzos por conocer la diversidad biológica del país y promover su uso sostenible. El instituto trabaja bajo la premisa de que el mejor medio para conservar la biodiversidad es estudiarla, valorarla y aprovechar las oportunidades que ésta ofrece para mejorar la calidad de vida del ser humano. Es una organización de la sociedad civil, de carácter no gubernamental y sin fines de lucro, con un fin de reconocido interés público, que labora en estrecha colaboración con diversos órganos del gobierno, universidades, sector empresarial y otras entidades públicas y privadas dentro y fuera del país.
