Icelandic New Energy was founded in 1999 following a declaration from the Government of Iceland declaring that Iceland intended to explore the possibility of transitioning from a fossil fuel paradigm to utilizing hydrogen for transport. The company was formed as a public-private partnership with key Icelandic stakeholders involved (current shareholders) along with Daimler AG, Shell International (Shell Hydrogen), and Norsk Hydro (later Statoil).
