On 1 January 2015, the Victorian Government established the Department of Health & Human Services, bringing together the former Department of Health, Department of Human Services and Sport and Recreation Victoria.
The Department of Health & Human Services works in partnership to develops and delivers policies, programs and services that support and enhance the well-being of all Victorians.

The former Department of Health worked with the Victorian community to provide better access to health, aged care and mental health and drug services.
The department did this through:
- managing the public hospital system
- developing health infrastructure in rural and metropolitan Victoria
- pursuing opportunities for partnership with the primary care sector and other governments
- public health interventions
- implementing major health initiatives such as the Victorian Cancer Action Plan
- preventative health initiatives and education programs.
