Ixelles, une des 19 communes de la Région bilingue de Bruxelles-Capitale, s'étend sur 6,34 km² et comptait 81.973 habitants en 2010, soit 12.929 habitants par km². Son histoire la plus ancienne ne se distingue guère de celle des nombreux villages qui, au moyen âge, formaient une sorte de "couronne" autour des villes principales. Ixelles, comme les autres communes entourant Bruxelles et, longtemps, a conservé des institutions largement autonomes et démocratiques. Au sein de la Région, Ixelles est une commune centrale. Elle jouxte le coeur historique du pays que constitue la Ville de Bruxelles.

The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) is a Belgian Federal State institution. The RBINS is involved in research activities and carries out public service missions. It is open to everyone through its museum welcoming more than 300.000 visitors every year.

The scientific institute: The Royal Museum for Central Africa must aspire to be a world centre of research and knowledge dissemination on past and present societies and natural environments of Africa, and in particular Central Africa, to foster – among the public at large and the scientific community – understanding of and interest in this area and, through partnerships, to contribute substantially to its sustainable development. Thus the core endeavours of this Africa-oriented institution consist of acquiring and managing collections, conducting scientific research, implementing the results of this research, disseminating knowledge, and mounting selected exhibitions of its collections. The museum: The AfricaMuseum is a centre for knowledge and resources on Africa, in particular Central Africa, in an historical, contemporary, and global context. The museum exhibits unique collections.
