This August, Hinterland launches a number of events, exhibitions and talks alongside new site-specific commissions of temporary public art. As we head towards economic depression and society becomes increasingly aware of issues surrounding global warming and the natural environment, Hinterland pays tribute to the geographical locations beside the River Trent and the industrial halo that surrounds Nottingham’s city centre. Hinterland is led independent curator, Jennie Syson. Working together with artists, Hinterland was set up to closely examine geographical areas that surround the River Trent in Nottingham, which make up a ten-mile car free cycle route around the city known as the Big Track. Temporary site-specific commissions are selected to scrutinise specific places as though encapsulated in a species quadrant. All events will be free to attend and the programme will be accompanied by ‘Reading Room’ events, which will discuss selected texts chosen to complement the artwork produced; Artist’s talks, presentations and seminars; a series of 3 bespoke publications documenting past and present projects including commissioned texts on the arts and ecology, site-specific art works and the local history of the Hinterland site.
