Highland Brewing Company is the largest independent, family-owned brewery native to the Southeast. Since 1994, we’ve been brewing beers that honor tradition while exploring new, innovative styles that continue to shape Southern craft culture. Our story began when Oscar Wong—Chinese-Jamaican immigrant, retired engineer, and Asheville’s “godfather of craft beer”—founded Highland in the basement of Barley’s Taproom using repurposed dairy equipment. His daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, joined the company in 2011 and now leads Highland as President/CEO, carrying forward her father’s vision of community, and quality. Today, Highland operates a 40-acre campus in East Asheville, having transforming a former film studio into a true destination brewery with a production facility, expansive indoor Taproom, outdoor Meadow, five sand volleyball courts, an 18‑hole disc golf course, and unique event spaces—including a mountain-view Rooftop.
