There are plenty of fantastic organisations working hard on the global struggles, however the concept of the OKE is to put our heads together and focus on local struggles, targeting children, to come up with long term sustainable solutions. This will help us to Grow Mighty Kids. The goal for OKE is to install Growing A Future into every Primary and Intermediate school in Papatoetoe, Auckland, by the end of 2017. This will enable up to 6,000 kids from years 1-8, to get their hands dirty and grow their own veggies, whilst developing many other great life skills. Having already launched successfully at Papatoetoe West School (which has an enrolment of 800 kids), we hope to be able to demonstrate to the other Papatoetoe schools the difference a garden can make. At the end of 2017, we hope to demonstrate to the rest of New Zealand, the benefits of a whole community growing a future together. Our other big goal is to plant 1,000 fruit trees in Auckland over the next couple of years (we're currently at 120). The kids today will reap the benefit in terms of the skills to nurture the trees but not the actual fruit, but in five years time, if these kids do their job, that 1,000 trees could provide over 25,000kg of fruit to kids around Auckland, giving kids access to healthy fast food!
