Walter E. Irving – known as the “father of the open-steel flooring industry” – produced his first grating products in the early 20th century. The Irving Subway Grating Company pioneered the production and use of steel grating throughout the United States. In 1965, Harsco Corporation acquired Irving Subway Grating, later merging it with Kerrigan Iron Works and Gary Gratings Company to form IKG Industries.
