But, because Hannah had made a promise to God that if she bore a son, she would give him back for God's service, she hands over her young child Samuel to Eli for training. Samuel grows up to become the last of Israel's judges, its first prophet, and counselor to its first two kings, Saul and David. Like the biblical Hannah, these moms, though not barren, were desperate to support their children and ensure the best for them. It is from these beginnings that parent engagement is such an important piece of the Hannah Project's work. We not only encourage peer mentoring among parents, but we also urge parents who have not done so to complete their education. To date, one parent has earned a GED, four have earned AA or professional degrees, one has earned a B.A., and a number are enrolled in college classes.
