Habitat for Humanity Choptank is committed to empowering more people to improve their housing situations. We believe that adequate and affordable housing is foundational to people building a better future for themselves and to transforming neighborhoods and communities. Habitat Choptank provides affordable mortgage financing to low-income individuals and families who could not otherwise qualify for conventional mortgage financing. Also key to this mission is the use of mostly volunteer labor with the homes that we build or renovate. Since 1992, our affiliate has completed over 100 homes between Dorchester and Talbot Counties on Maryland's rural Eastern Shore. Houses are sold at no profit to qualifying buyers and financed with an affordable mortgage. Monthly mortgage payments including taxes and insurance are repaid by the Habitat homeowner over 30-35 years and are often less than what that home owner once paid in rent. These mortgage funds are reinvested into our mission to support the construction of future homes in our two-county region. Habitat Choptank is a named affiliate of Habitat International, a global housing ministry that operates in over 50 countries around the world.
