Approximately 22,000 students attend the UofM, including more than 2,200 first-time freshmen and 2,500 students who live in university housing. In 2013, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Memphis among the top 10 in the country for student internship placements and lauded it as one of the top 13 for its teacher preparation programs. Additionally, its graduate programs in audiology, speech-language pathology and rehabilitation counseling are consistently ranked among the top 20 in the nation by U.S. News. Founded in 1994, Urban Harvest has garnered a well-deserved reputation as a leader in the local food movement. We focus on building food security and resiliency to the greater Houston community through weekly farmers market, adult and youth gardening education, mobile farmers markets and robust network of over 168+ community gardens. Our work provides thousands of people access to local, healthy food and supports an ever-growing network of farmers and growers in a 200 mile radius of Houston. Under the direction of an all-volunteer board, Urban Harvest has grown from humble beginnings to employ a full-time staff and literally thousands of volunteers. Funding comes from individual and corporate donations, private foundations, and public grants.
