Groundhog Information

Hope Stirs! At the darkest of days, when all is a gloom. The groundhog rises and strolls out of his burrow. Though we look for hope in the burning sun, winter is shortened for all when the clouds momentarily hide his lighted shadow. Hope will stir and always light the way! Make every day as great as Groundhog Day! The legend of Groundhog Day is based on an old Scottish couplet: If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, therell be two winters in the year. (If clouds block the sun, there will be an early spring for all to enjoy.) On February 2, people gather at Gobblers Knob, a wooded knoll just a little over a mile outside of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to see what Phil will do. The ceremony in Punxsutawney was first held in 1887. Since then (and with a little help from the 1993 movie) Punxsutawney Phils ® fearless forecast has created a national media event. The groundhog comes out of his burrow, looks for his shadow early in the morning of February 2nd and utters his prediction to the Groundhog Club President in groundhogese. The President then translates the prediction for all to hear. If Punxsutawney Phil ® sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter.
