Gretna was developed after the Burlington Railroad was built between Omaha and Ashland in 1886. Prior to the creation of Gretna was the small trading post of Forest City. Due to the creation of the railroad, Forest City disappeared and the only remnant from the city is the cemetery. It is believed that Gretna was named after Scotland's Gretna Green. Today, Gretna is a warm community. The city continues to grow thanks to the community's constant emphasis on business growth. While quite a few Gretna residents work in Omaha, many run local business in Gretna or work for the excellent public schools.
