Greenwood County Community Foundation - The Foundation came into being when an anonymous donor provided a significant gift to start a local community foundation, believing that Greenwood County had an opportunity to increase charitable giving to all worthy causes and institutions and raise awareness of their needs. The donor provided initial funding of approximately $2.5 million and a dollar-for-dollar match of future donations of up to $3.0 million. The Foundation was chartered and received its 501(c)(3) approval from the IRS in 2009. In 2010 the board was organized and began its planning. Late in 2011 begin GCCF operations under the leadership of its first Executive Director Mark Kasper. A volunteer board of directors oversees all aspects of the Foundation and its operations. The founding board included: Joe Chandler, Linda Dolny, (Vice-Chairman), Dru James, Darrell Johnson, Sid Johnston, Sam Leaman (Secretary), Jukie Leary, Peter Manning, (Treasurer), Mamie Nicholson, Sam Tolbert (Chairman). GCCF works collaboratively with all individuals and organizations that are interested in improving the quality of life in Greenwood County. The Foundation provides grants and funding to many local (and even nationals and international) charitable organizations. Large national foundations are inclined to provide grants to local causes through community foundations, and GCCF can provide that conduit. GCCF does not conduct annual campaigns, but asks people to give to local worthy causes and institutions through the GCCF in their lifetimes and through their estate plans. Within Greenwood County Community Foundation you can create and name your own Fund. After conferring with the foundation staff and your financial advisor, you decide what kind of fund you want to create. You basically have four options a Donor Advised Fund-which operates much like a private foundation without all of the administrative costs and management issues, a Field-of-Interest Fund-which serves a general community need such as hunger and homelessness ...
