Green Coal (Pty) Ltd developed a proven technology to convert biomass in an environmentally friendly production machine to a Green Coal product. The advantages of the process and product are, amongst others, that it could be utilsed as an substitute for coal without adding infrastructure to the power utilities but with the advantages as a CO2 neutral fuel, consistent High Calorific Values, high density fuel, utilization of unwanted materials (e.g. alien vegetation, or discarded coal, wood chips, saw dust, etc) as biomass feedstock Charcoal is perhaps the oldest known fuel, having been found in archaeological sites dating as far back as the Pleistocene era. As humans entered the Bronze Age, charcoal was the only material that could simultaneously heat and reduce metallic ores. During the Industrial Revolution, charcoal was displaced in most ironworks by coke derived from coal. A good example in the modern world of its use is still found in Brazil, which lacks adequate coking coal resources, where most of the charcoal produced in Brazil is still used to reduce iron ore. Charcoal destined for metallurgical use in Brazil, is made from fast-growing wood species raised on plantations. Charcoal is still extensively used in Asia, India and South America. In developing countries charcoal may constitute up to 40 percent of energy use. Greencoal as replacement for traditional charcoal is mainly used for: • Domestic cooking and barbecue purposes; • Industrial use for the processing of metallic ores • For electricity production; • As a filtration medium and an adsorbent; and • A horticultural soil improver.
