Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.The University was formed by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras. College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG)(1794) Madras Institute of Technology , Chrompet (MIT)(1949) and three Technological Departments of the University of Madras. Alagappa College of Technology (ACT)(1944) School of Architecture and Planning (SAP)(1957) Situated in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. A third campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future. Since December 2001,it has become a large, highly renowned affiliated University, having brought into its fold about 225 Self-financing Engineering Colleges six Government Colleges and three Government-aided Engineering colleges located in various parts of Tamilnadu State.

Founded in 1964 as the Regional Engineering College, the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, was one of the longest-established of the 31 regional institutions upgraded with the creation of the National Institute of Technology system from 2002. Affiliated successively to Madras, Bharathidasan and Anna universities, it attained university status in 2003 and the right to award its own degrees in 2007. Operating with the motto "Truth Alone Triumphs" and with the declared mission of providing "valuable resources for industry and society through excellence in technology and research", the university was ranked 24th in the 2019 National Institutional Ranking Framework and was named University of the Year for 2017 by The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. With its strengths reflected in the offer of doctoral programmes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli has grown rapidly in recent years, fuelled by funding from Indian government agencies. It is a lead institution under the government’s Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP). Its international partners include the universities of Loughborough and Leicester. Distinctive features of its 800-acre campus in Tamil Nadu’s fourth largest city – also often abbreviated to Trichy and known for features including one of the largest operating Hindu temples in the world - include the administration building’s clock tower and, next to the architecture building, a decommissioned MIG23 military aircraft. Every September the university stages the Festember cultural festival started in 1975, which attracts students from more than 500 colleges across India. The 44th edition, in September 2018, was a four-day event with the theme of Arabian Odyssey.

Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College (SREC), situated in Coimbatore and established in 1994 under the auspices of SNR Sons Charitable Trust, stands as one of the trust's 17 esteemed institutions.
