Global Health Investment Fund Information

The Global Health Investment Fund (GHIF) was established to finance the development of new drugs, vaccines and diagnostics for public health challenges that disproportionately burden poor communities. Our investments support late-stage product development and the early commercialization of promising new healthcare technologies that can be affordably delivered in resource-limited settings. GHIF employs a range of investment structures including mezzanine debt, convertible debt, preferred equity and project financing, with an average investment target of approximately $10 million per project. Each GHIF project must advance the fund’s social impact objectives and demonstrate the ability to achieve commercial success. Our investments support new or improved interventions for a wide range of neglected infections diseases--such as tuberculosis, malaria, cholera and river blindness--in addition to family planning products and tools to reduce maternal and infant mortality. Structured by J.P. Morgan and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, GHIF is capitalized by a diverse group of limited partners, including anchor support from from Grand Challenges Canada (funded by the Government of Canada), the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (acting through KfW) and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation. Other notable GHIF investors include the International Finance Corporation, AXA, GSK, Merck and the Pfizer Foundation. GHIF is pioneering the concept of a healthcare investment fund that strives to save and improve millions of lives while also generating a competitive financial return for its investors. We measure our success on the basis of lives impacted by the projects we finance, which we consider as important as the fund's financial performance. We are encouraged to see that many investors are starting to look at their own contributions to society, rather than just financial performance. Profits are important, but so is making a difference.
