At GIA, we believe every gem has a story — formed deep within the earth and revealed through science. For nearly 100 years, we’ve been bringing those stories to light through research, discovery and education. As a nonprofit, our mission is to ensure confidence in gems and jewelry by blending innovation, knowledge and science. From creating the 4Cs of diamond quality to inventing tools used worldwide, we make learning an adventure and turn discovery into truth. We don’t buy, sell or appraise gems. Instead, we provide trusted reports, education, and insights that help people — from industry professionals to everyday consumers — make informed decisions with clarity.
This is GIA: where curiosity fuels innovation, knowledge builds confidence and science inspires a world of trust.
Creating and supporting gemmologists since 1908.
Gem-A is the world’s longest-established provider of gemstone education. Our Diploma in Gemmology is the direct descendant of the gem course that was proposed for the UK jewellery trade in 1908. Our prestigious Diplomas in Gemmology and Diamonds, taught around the world, are now globally recognised as qualifications of the highest status. Diploma graduates may apply for election to Fellowship (FGA) or Diamond Membership (DGA) of the Association.
Gem-A forms an international community of gem professionals and enthusiasts. With our commitment to high educational standards, we serve the interests of the gem and jewellery industries and support gemmological research worldwide. In addition to our educational programmes we provide membership opportunities, a shop for the purchasing of gemmological instruments and two internationally distributed publications, Gems & Jewellery and The Journal of Gemmology.
The American Gem Society (AGS) is a nonprofit trade association that has stood for consumer protection, ethics, and ongoing education since 1934. Our members are held to the industry's highest standards and our credentialed members, also known as titleholders, are required to pass an annual recertification exam in order to maintain their AGS titles. Members of the AGS are passionate about jewelry and dedicated to creating a positive buying experience for their customers.
