Giving Gap (formerly Give Blck) was formed in 2020 by Christina Lewis, Stephanie Ellis-Smith and David Setiadi in response to protests around the globe calling for organizations to reform systems perpetuating racial and economic inequities with the premise that philanthropic support of Black founded/led nonprofits is a critical piece to tackling systemic racism. Black organizations are most likely to be grounded in the needs of Black communities, have missions connected to positive action for Black lives, employ Black people and empower Black leaders but yet are systemically underfunded. Only a tiny fraction of the $450 billion Americans give to charities each year support Black organizations. Conversely, Bridgespan Group’s Four Pathways to Greater Giving report on America's ultra-wealthy donors found that “almost 60% of US Giving Pledge signatories reference the American Dream in their own experiences or funding priorities. But to date, philanthropists have lacked a national platform that provides them with a simple, compelling way to invest in efforts to increase upward economic mobility.” Seeking to catalyze a moment into a movement, Giving Gap exists to advance racial equity in giving and mobilize positive action for Black lives by connecting people to causes they care about. As the only existing repository on the status and impact of Black-founded organizations, Giving Gap has vetted and cataloged over 1,000 Black-founded nonprofits and engaged 50,000 users to collectively donate over $2 million dollars. Our 3 bold goals for closing the funding gap for Black-founded/led nonprofits are as follows: 1/ Build the only comprehensive platform of Black-founded/led and serving organizations to support research on the specific needs and impact of this niche sector. 2/ Galvanize $1 billion in funding to Black-founded/led nonprofits. 3/ Mobilize 1 million individuals to commit to supporting Black-founded/led nonprofits.
