Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. GOTR-KMC is of more than 200 Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada. Founded in 2004, and expanded to include Muskegon County in 2016, Girls on the Run of Kent and Muskegon Counties has worked with over 20,000 girls. In 2016 alone, more than 2,500 girls participated in our programs, and we provided over $94,000 in program scholarship assistance to over 1,000 participants. We accomplish this through our local volunteers. These volunteers serve as role models to the girls through coaching the 12-week, 24 lesson curricula, which is delivered through after-school programs, recreation centers and other non-profit settings. Mission: We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
