Our mission at California Protective Parents Association (CPPA) is to protective children from incest and family violence through research, education and advocacy. CPPA has been standing up for children of abuse since 1999. With 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys sexually abused by the time they are 18, we know many of these occurrences happen in the home. We work to end sexual abuse in families and abused children from being forced to live with their physical and/or sexual abuser. Currently, we are working on changing the face of abuse that is handled by family courts. o In California, if you discover your child is being abused (physically, sexually or otherwise) by your spouse and report it, you have an 85% chance of losing custody to the abuser. o It is estimated 58,000 children each year are forced to live with their abusive parent. o In the past 10 years, the death rate for children has increased and we have seen over 560 deaths of children in custody issues when safety issues were raised by a protective parent. Children who are dealing with abuse in families usually have other adverse childhood experiences (ACE). As we learned from the ACE study, these factors impact children long into adulthood. CPPA wants to end these adverse experiences that can lead to drug and alcohol addictions, lower grades, school dropouts, teenage pregnancy and higher suicide rates. We can help children now to allow them to live healthier lives. Together we can bring this needed change.
