Using the basic free service, users add and invite their relatives to join their family tree, which Geni compares to other trees. Matching trees are then merged into the single world family tree, which currently contains over 200 million ancestors and living users. Geni welcomes casual genealogists and experts who wish to discover new relatives and stay in touch with family. Geni was founded by former executives and early employees of PayPal, eGroups, eBay, and Tribe, and is backed by venture capital firms Founders Fund and Charles River Ventures. Geni is privately held and based in Burbank, California. In November 2012, Geni was acquired by MyHeritage Ltd. and is now a MyHeritage company.
