playgeni makes screen-free storytelling hardware that puts kids ages 3+ in charge of the story. Born as a spin-out from the MIT Design Lab, playgeni won the Toys & Play Award at the 2026 Core77 Design Awards. The storymaker turns physical blocks into original audio stories. Kids choose the characters, settings, and themes, press a button, and hear a story built from their choices. Parents can set boundaries and learning goals, or step back and let them create on their own. Most kids' audio devices are playlists: pick a track, press play. We believe technology should do more for young minds, and less to them: - No screen, microphone, or camera: Nothing is recorded, and nothing is learned about a child from how they play. - Closed-loop by design: The only inputs are the blocks, and every story stays age-appropriate. - Human-authored: Every world and block starts with our in-house children's book author. - Stories end: Each session has a fixed length, with no feeds, nudges, or next episode pulling kids back. - A tool, not a friend: It doesn't talk back or remember. The magic comes from the child's imagination. Pre-order at playgeni.com.
